Here is some history of Earl's lineage garnered from the Welsh Cob site where many of these fine Cobs can be viewed: www.welshcobs.info.  Photos can be seen on the right.

North Fork Black Earl was sired by Canterbrook's Lywynog Du, sired by Trevallion Royal Consort, sired by Derwen Telynor. Derwen Telynor was born in 1972 and was also sire of 1982 Prince of Wales Cup winner Cyttir Telynor. Derwen Telynor died in 1995.  Consort's dam is Trevallion Duchess sired by the famous Tyhen Comet, winner of the 1969 Royal Welsh.  He died in 1995. His dam was Derwen Seren Teledu by Pentre Eiddwen Comet and his sire was Nebo Black Magic.  Nebo Black Magic was born in 1962. He was black with a star and two white hind fetlocks standing at 15hh. His sire was Pentre Eiddwen Comet and his dam was Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady. Nebo Black Magic won the 1971 male championship at the Royal Welsh Show. He was reserve overall champion to the winning mare Parc Rachel at the 1971 and 1975 Royal welsh shows. In 1973 he went one stage better, winning the George Prince of Wales Cup from the winning mare Tyhen Mattie.  One of his best progeny without doubt is the lovely black mare Derwen Rosinda who was foaled in 1970.

Nebo Black Magic was sired by Pentre Eiddwen Comet, born in 1946. He was bay with a white off hind fetlock. He was 14.2hh. His sire was Eiddwens Image and his dam was Dewi Black Bess.Pentre Eiddwen Comet was a bold free moving stallion, winner in 1951 of the George Prince of Wales cup, supreme accolade in the Welsh Cob society an award which he was to win again five years later. It was at the 1951 Royal Welsh show that he brought the house down and the grand stand to it's feet when he won the Tom and Sprightly Cup an award which he won a total of five times. Pentre Eiddwen Comet made his presence felt as a sire throughout the principality by his participation in the Premium scheme where he was an exceptionally popular stallion, he appeared just as fiery and active travelling the various counties as he was when waiting to go into battle in the show ring.

Eiddwen's Images' sire was Mathrafal Eiddwen, born in 1914. He was bay with a near hind white fetlock standing at 14.2hh. His sire was King Flyer, King Flyer was born in 1894. He was by Young Welsh Flyer and out of Bess, who is by Young Trotting Comet. Mathrafal Eidden's dam was Polly of Maesglynog. Mathrafal Eiddwen notched up a few prizes in the Royal Welsh show rings with a second prize in 1923 to Llwynog Flyer. It was in 1926 that he first won the coveted Prince of Wales Cup with the eminently successful sire, Llethi Valiant standing second. He repeated the award in 1927 but in 1928 Llethi Valiant beat him so he had to be content with second place. He had his revenge of Llethi Valiant at the 1929 show where Eiddwen won and Llethi Valiant was relegated into fifth place. This was also Eiddwen's third notch on the Prince of Wales Cup, a feat that he repeated for the fourth and last time in 1930.

Nebo Black Magic's dam was Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady, born in 1958. She was dark chestnut with a blaze and four white legs standing at 14.2hh. Her sire was Mathrafal and her dam was Tyngwndwn Beauty.Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady had a strong dislike to being shown and her claim to fame is through her progeny, which have taken the show ring by storm. Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady was out of Tyngwndwn Beauty was born in 1939. She was Palomino and stood at 14.2hh. Her sire was Cymror Wy and her dam was Isfryn Bess. Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady's sire, Mathrafal was born in 1936. His sire was Mab y Brenin and his dam was Poll of Golfa. Mathrafal has been the most influential Cob Stallion in terms of siring potential future Royal Welsh Champions. Between his progeny they represented a total of 13 Championships. Tyngwndwn Mathrafal Lady was out of Tyngwndwn Beauty was born in 1939. She was Palomino and stood at 14.2hh. Her sire was Cymror Wy and her dam was Isfryn Bess.

Mathrafal duly won a first prize at the 1937 Montgomeryshire Show. At the 1938 combined Royal Agricultural Society of England and Royal Welsh Show he won the young stock class and went on to win the male championship. His show career was then interrupted by the war years. He won a second prize at the 1947 Royal Welsh Show, third in 1949, second in 1950, third in 1951, champion in 1952 and fourth in 1953.

Pentre Eiddwen Comet's sire was Eiddwens Image, born in 1940. He was by Mathrafal Eiddwen, and out of Dewi Rosina, who was by Blaenwaun True Briton.

Canterbrook's Lywynog Du's dam Upland's Empress was sired by Derwen
Disturbance who was by Derwen Rosina's Last.  Upland's Empress was out of Derwen Viscountess who was by Derwen Rosina's Last and out of Derwen Queen. Uplands Empress has quite an impressive reputation. Before being imported in 1985, she was 4th in the filly's class at the Royal Welsh. She was by her dam's side while her dam won the George Prince of Wales cup!

Derwen Queen was out of Derwen Rosina. Derwen Rosina was born in 1962 and she was black with a small white star. She stood at 14.2hh. Her sire was Cahn Dafydd and her dam was Rhandir Black, by Pentre Eiddwen Comet. Pentre Eiddwen Comet  was born in 1946. He was bay with a white off hind fetlock. He was 14.2hh. His sire was Eiddwens Image and his dam was Dewi Black Bess. Dewi Black Bess was born in 1926. She was the winner of the Prince of Wales Cup in 1935, and she was the dam of Dewi Rosina. Dewi Rosina won the foal class at the Llanilar Show. She won seven
prizes (including championships at Cardigan, Llangwyryfon and Crugybar) in
1946, five first prizes in 1947 including the championship at Lampeter and
Llangwyryfon and a second prize at the Royal Welsh Show. In 1949 she was
second at the Royal Welsh Show. Then, in 1951 at seventeen years old, she won for the first time at the Royal Welsh. Her final appearance at the Royal
Welsh was in 1953 where she was supreme champion and therefore her name became engraved on the George, Prince of Wales cup. The blood of Dewi Rosina is to be found all over the world.

Eiddwens Image was born in 1940. He was by Mathrafal Eiddwen, and out of Dewi Rosina, who was by Blaenwaun True Briton.

If any Welsh Cob has been missed at the peak of its career then this is the case of Derwen Rosina. She was Champion female at the Royal Welsh Show at the remarkably young age of four years, a feat that she repeated again in 1967 and 1968; on the last occasion she was also recipient of the George, Prince of Wales Cup. Derwen Rosina died in 1970. She was the dam of Derwen Llwynog and, her last foal, Derwen Rosina's Last. Llethi Valiant paid many visits to the Royal Welsh Shows in his younger years: winning a second prize in 1924, fourth in 1925, second in 1926 behind Mathrafal Eiddwen, first in 1928 beating Mathrafal Eiddwen, fifth in 1929
and a second on his last visit in 1931.

Ceitho Welsh Comet was the sire of Dewi Black Bess  and Llethi Valiant. He was born in 1913. He was black with a white inside off hind fetlock. He stood at 14.2hh. His sire was Caradog Flyer and his dam was Rhystyd Black Bess.


 

North Forks Black Earl's dam, Sydenham Morwydden, has an equally impressive pedigree, combined with Canterbrook's Llwynog Du, their bloodlines are artfully line bred.

Sydenham Morwydden, By Derwen Supreme, by Derwen Rosina's Last, by Nebo Black Magic (see above for Nebo Black Magic bloodline) Derwen Rosina's Last was born in 1970. He was black with a star and two white hind fetlocks. He stood at 14.3hh. His dam was Derwen Rosina and his sire was Nebo Black Magic. Derwen Rosina's Last made his mark at stud, topping the 1976 Cob sire ratings with such as Derwen Telynores and Derwen Serenllys. Derwen Rosina's Last was equal top sire, with Nebo Black Magic, in 1978 and fourth in 1979.

Derwen Rosinas Last, out of Derwen Rosina was born in 1962 and she was black with a small white star. She stood at 14.2hh. Her sire was Cahn Dafydd and her dam was Rhandir Black, by Pentre Eiddwen Comet. Llethi Valiant paid many visits to the Royal Welsh Shows in his younger years: winning a second prize in 1924, fourth in 1925, second in 1926 behind Mathrafal Eiddwen, first in 1928 beating Mathrafal Eiddwen, fifth in 1929 and a second on his last visit in 1931.

North Forks Black Earl's dam, Sydenham Morwydden was out of the mare Liddle Arietta who was sired by Hewid Cardi who was by Derwen Black Magic. Hewid Cardi was born in 1969. His sire was Derwen Black Magic and his dam was Chancerie Polly, by Caradog Llwyd. Derwen Black Magic is by Nebo Black Magic (his lineage can be seen above) and his dam is Derwen Rosie by Coedllys Stardust. Coedllys Stardust was born in 1960 and was by Pentre Eiddwen Comet, (see his lineage above) out of Dinah Bess by Brenin Gwalia. Dinah Bess was born in 1949. She was by Brenin Gwalia and out of Dainty Dinah by Blaenwaun Trotting Briton. Brenin Gwalia was born in 1934. He was chestnut with a blaze and four white legs, standing at 14.2hh. His sire was Gwalia Victor and his dam was Cymraes. Cymraes was born in 1929. She was by Mathrafal Brenin and out of Doll by Flying Express. Mathrafal Brenin was born in 1911. He was by Trotting Railway II and out of Dolly by Evolve. Gwalia Victor was born in 1924. He was by High Stepping Gambler II and out of Hendraws Doll, who was by Briton Flyer. High Stepping Gambler II was by High Stepping Gambler I, and out of Fanny, who was by King Jack II. A highlight of his showing career was at the 1947 Royal Welsh Show where he put up a great show and won the male championship. In 1948 he was selected by the Welsh Pony & Cob Society to represent the breed at the International Horse Show, where he proved to be a favorite with the spectators.

Liddle Arietta's dam Hewid Sheila was also by Derwen Black Magic and out of the mare Hewyd Delia. Hewyd Delia was sired by Caradog Llwyd, born in 1949. He was dun with a star and white hind fetlocks. He stood at 14.3hh. His sire was Cardi Llwyd and his dam was Verwig Fly, who was by Llethi Valiant. His best performance at the Royal Welsh Show was in 1953 when he stood third to Pentre Eiddwen Comet and Llwynog-y-Garth. Cardi Llwyd is by Ceitho Welsh Flyer, and out of Gwyryfon Nancy who is by Welsh Model. He was born in 1931.

Llethi Valiant was born in 1921. He was 14hh and black. His sire was Ceitho Welsh Comet and his dam was Llethi Flower by High Stepping Gambler 11  who was by High Stepping Gambler I, and out of Fanny, who was by King Jack II. Llethi Valiant paid many visits to the Royal Welsh Shows in his younger years: winning a second prize in 1924, fourth in 1925, second in 1926 behind Mathrafal Eiddwen, first in 1928 beating Mathrafal Eiddwen, fifth in 1929 and a second on his last visit in 1931.
